This is the pre-milling cutter head that sits in front of the glue pot on an edgebander. It trims the raw board edge square and burr-free before the banding is applied, and on a high-speed line it carries the whole quality of the finished joint: if the pre-milled edge is not clean, no amount of glue or pressure will hide it.
The cutter is 100 mm in diameter, 63 mm high, with a 30 mm bore and a Z 2+2 cutting edge layout — two left-hand and two right-hand PCD tips in a spiral arrangement. The left-hand version replaces LEUCO 181518 and the right-hand version replaces LEUCO 181519, which makes it a direct drop-in for SCM and HOLZ-HER equipment already running that tooling.

Why PCD tips on an edgebander pre-milling head

The pre-milling cutter works in the most abrasive position on the machine. It is cutting raw chipboard and MDF with melamine, paper or HPL faces, at feed rates measured in tens of metres per minute, for two shifts a day. Tungsten carbide dulls quickly against the mineral fillers in engineered board; PCD holds its edge for months rather than weeks.
A dull pre-milling cutter does not just produce a worse edge — it changes the geometry of the whole joint. The edge rounds over, the glue line opens, and the trim station downstream starts working harder to compensate. Replacing it with PCD is usually the single highest-value tooling upgrade on an edgebander.

Chip-free jointing on melamine and veneer

The requirement is that the cutter leaves no chipping on the top and bottom face of the panel, because the banding only covers the edge, not the face. The spiral layout and the Z 2+2 configuration exist to shear the face material rather than push through it, and to balance the radial and axial cutting forces so the cutter head stays stable at production speed.
Feed rate, spindle speed and cutter sharpness all have to match. A cutter that is slightly dull, or run too slowly, will chip melamine even if it is geometrically correct — which is why we recommend replacing the head on condition rather than on a fixed calendar.

Compatible dimensions for other edgebanders

The same cutter family covers the common edgebander platforms. Other sizes we build: 100 x 34 x 30 Z 3+3 (IMA, Brandt, replaces LEUCO 181152 / 181153); 100 x 48 x 30 Z 3+3 (IMA, Brandt, SCM-IDM, replaces 181154 / 181155); 85 x 45 x 30 Z 3+3 (OTT, replaces 181165 / 181166); 100 x 48 x 30 Z 2+2 (HOLZ-HER, SCM, replaces 181516 / 181517); 100 x 63 x 30 Z 3+3 (Brandt, replaces 182175 / 182176); 100 x 63 x 30 Z 3+3 (SCM, replaces 182393 / 182392).
We also supply pre-milling cutters for Biesse, Homag, Brandt, Felder, OTT, Hebrock, HOLZ-HER, IMA and Bi-Matic machines. If your machine is not on the list, send the bore, height and the old part number and we will match it.

How to specify the correct cutter

Four values decide the order: outer diameter, height, bore, and the Z layout (2+2 or 3+3). The rotation direction matters too — a left-hand cutter on a right-hand spindle will not cut. The machine brand narrows the choice but does not replace the measurement, because the same brand can run different heads on different models.
The simplest way to order is to photograph the existing cutter head on the spindle with a tape measure across the diameter and height, plus the part number engraved on the body.
On an edgebander, the pre-milling cutter is the tool that decides whether the joint is invisible.

Frequently asked questions

Does this cutter fit my edgebander?
The bore is 30 mm and the machines it is built for are SCM, HOLZ-HER. Four values decide the fit — outer diameter, height, bore and Z layout — and the machine brand narrows the choice without replacing the measurement. Check the bore and the keyway against your spindle before ordering.
Is it a direct replacement for the OEM part number?
Yes — Left hand (replaces LEUCO 181518) / Right hand (replaces LEUCO 181519). Quote that part number when you inquire and the specification is cross-referenced against it, which is faster and more reliable than measuring a worn head.
What happens when the cutting edges dull?
The cutting edges are PCD (polycrystalline diamond). A dull head shows up first as a rougher edge, then as a glue line that opens on every panel. Deal with it on condition rather than on a fixed calendar, because the wear rate depends on the panel material and the feed rate.
Which panels does it cut cleanly?
Its application is chip-free jointing and rabbeting of melamine, paper, HPL-laminated and veneered panels. The requirement in every case is the same: no chipping on the top and bottom face, because the banding covers the edge and not the face. Feed rate, spindle speed and cutter condition all have to match for that to hold.
